Abstract:
|
Tuberculosis ( TB) and human immunodeficiency virus (hiv) disease have been inextricably bound together from the early yeras of the hiv/ acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (aids) epidemic. Their dangerous synergy affects all aspects of each disease, from pathogenesis and epidemiologic profile to clinical presentation, treatment, and prevention; to larger issues of social, economic, and political consequence (1). Hiv infection favors the reactivation and progression of latent Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection to overt tuberculosis infection, and mycobacterium tuberculosis favors the replication of hiv and precipatates the natural course of the infection toward advanced stage or severe immune-depression (2-4).
